Signs You May Need a Root Canal

A toothache that keeps coming back can be easy to brush off, especially when the discomfort settles down for a while. But certain changes can signal an infection inside your tooth that may require root canal treatment to remove it and help save the tooth.

At McDowell Dental & Aesthetics in Abington, PA, Dr. Ashley combines advanced LVI training with modern dental technology to provide comprehensive care for Abington and Upper Dublin communities.

What Are the Signs You May Need a Root Canal?

A root canal may be needed when the pulp inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to decay, damage, or trauma. Common warning signs include:

  • Persistent tooth pain: Strong or recurring pain can indicate that the tissue inside the tooth is irritated or infected.
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold: Sensitivity that lingers after eating or drinking may point to a problem deeper within the tooth.
  • Pain when chewing: Tenderness or discomfort when you bite down can be another reason to have the tooth examined.
  • Swollen or tender gums: Inflammation around one particular tooth may develop when an infection is present.
  • Tooth discoloration: A tooth that becomes noticeably darker can sometimes indicate internal damage.
  • A bump on the gums: A small pimple-like bump near the affected tooth can be associated with infection.

What Happens During Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment typically involves a few key steps:

  • Remove infected tissue: We remove the infected or inflamed pulp from inside the tooth.
  • Clean the tooth: The inside is carefully cleaned and disinfected.
  • Fill and seal: The cleaned space is filled and sealed to protect the tooth.
  • Restore the tooth: A crown may be placed to strengthen and protect it.
  • Create the crown: With CEREC technology, we can create many porcelain crowns right in our office.

Have Your Tooth Checked Before the Problem Gets Worse

Persistent dental pain, sensitivity, swelling, or an unusual change in a tooth deserves a closer look. Treating an infection promptly can help relieve discomfort and may prevent the tooth from eventually requiring extraction.
